Your electric furnace stopped working. The thermostat says 72, but your living room feels like a walk-in freezer. Panic sets in. Or, you just sigh and call a pro.
Don’t call the pro yet.
Electric furnaces are simpler than their gas counterparts because they don’t deal with combustion, gas lines, or flue vents. They rely on electricity and heat. When something breaks, it’s usually something visible. Something you can check without ripping apart the unit.
Before you buy a new furnace or wait three days for a technician, try this. You have the tools. You have the willingness. You just need to know where to look.
The Safety First Rule
Stop.
Look at the big red switch. It’s usually a standard light switch mounted on the wall next to the furnace, or a pull switch hanging from a cord. Make sure it’s in the ON position. If it’s off, flip it on.
Wait five minutes. Listen.
If the blower kicks on, you’re done. If not, move to step two.
Next, check the main breaker in your electrical panel. Electric furnaces draw a lot of power. A surge can trip the breaker. Flip it off, then back on. If it trips immediately, stop. You have a short circuit. Call an electrician. Do not keep flipping it.
Check the Air Filter
This is the lazy fix that saves your life. Or at least, your wallet.
A clogged air filter restricts airflow. When airflow drops, the furnace overheats. The high-limit switch cuts the power to the heating elements to prevent a fire. The blower might still run, but no heat comes out.
Pull out the filter. Is it gray? Caked with dust? Hair? Dog fur?
Replace it. Use a MERV 8 to 11 filter. Anything higher restricts airflow too much for standard residential units. Anything lower lets in too much dirt.
Slide it back in. Run the furnace again.
If you have heat, you just saved $100 in diagnostic fees. If you don’t, keep going.
Inspect the Circuit Breakers Inside the Unit
Most electric furnaces have multiple breakers inside the cabinet. One for the control board. One for the blower. Two or four more for the individual heating elements.
Open the front panel. You’ll see a small box of breakers. They look like the ones in your basement panel.
Look for any that are in the middle or flipped to the OFF position.
If you find one, flip it to OFF first, then back to ON.
If it trips again immediately, that circuit is dead. You might have a bad heating element or a failed relay.
The Thermostat Check
Is the thermostat set to HEAT? Is the fan set to AUTO?
Sometimes, you accidentally leave it on ON. This runs the blower continuously, which can mask the fact that the heating elements aren’t firing.
Lower the temperature setting by five degrees. Listen for a click.
If you hear the click, the thermostat is sending a signal. The problem is downstream.
